Theatre and Opera
The Royal Opera House at Covent Garden is a grandiose and opulent building which puts on excellent operatic and ballet performances. The main theatre district is the West End, where the big hit musicals pull the biggest crowds. Some of the shows have been running for years, such as Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King.
Live Music
Jazz Café on Parkway in Camden is an award-winning live music venue. It’s funky yet cosy and has great jazz acts every night. Notting Hill Arts Club on Notting Hill Gate is another good small venue. Bigger venues for rock gigs include BrixtonAcademy, the Shepherd’s Bush Empire and Earl’s Court. If classical music is more your thing, the Barbican is home to the London Symphony Orchestra and the South Bank Centre usually has a good programme of classical performances.
Sport
England is the home of football so London has no shortage of football clubs. If you fancy watching a match, take your pick from a wide range of clubs from heavyweights Arsenal and Chelsea to Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Charlton Athletic and Fulham to name but a few. Rugby’s main home is Twickenham, while cricket matches are held at Lord’s and The Oval. If you’re an athletics fan, regular events are held at the CrystalPalace.
