London’s bursting with fabulous places to eat and drink. There are several good areas in the city where you can enjoy a good meal and a fun night out. Here are just a few suggestions.
Covent Garden
Rules on Maiden Lane is the oldest restaurant in the city and it’s still going strong. Its beautiful vintage interior makes eating here a fantastic experience, and the food is excellent too. It serves traditional British dishes and its specialities are oysters, game, puddings and pies.
Indigo, on the other hand, is right up-to-date. Situated on Aldwych, It’s a stylish and contemporary British restaurant serving new and innovative versions of well loved British favourites.
Covent Garden can be expensive, so if you’re on a budget the best places to go are probably some of the large chains such as All Bar One and Wagamama, which are stylish but reasonably priced.
Camden
Camden is one of the liveliest and trendiest places for going out in London. It’s full of young people and has a vibrant atmosphere. There’s a vast choice of restaurants serving all sorts of international cuisine. Le Petit Train on Chalcot Road is a great French restaurant, while Belgo Noord serves Belgian favourites such as moules-frites and has an extensive beer menu. Zensai is a fresh and funky restaurant on Inverness Street, with exotic cocktails and adventurous Asian fusion cuisine. For informal dining or a light meal try Bar Gansa, also on Inverness Street. It has delicious Spanish tapas dishes.
Brick Lane
London has a large Asian community, which is concentrated around Brick Lane in the East End. Consequently there are some fantastic Indian and Bangladeshi restaurants such as Preem and Café Naz, which serve Bengali dishes. Sweet and Spicy is a great no-frills restaurant with delicious Indian food, while the modern and trendy Monsoon serves tangy and mouth watering Tandoori dishes.
Soho
Soho is home to London’s Chinatown and the Cantonese, Sezchuan and Thai restaurants all over this area offer excellent value for money, especially in their set menus and banquets. Chuen Cheng Ku on Wardour Street has good dim sum and noodles, served in buffet trolleys. Busaba Eathai on the same street serves unusual and exotic Thai dishes at rustic wooden tables.
Islington
The Elk in the Woods is a cosy and intimate restaurant in the beautiful cobbled Camden Passage which serves modern European food at good prices. There are plenty of other Bohemian and eclectic eateries in Islington, such as the Afghan Kitchen on Islington Green, which has a good vegetarian menu as well as excellent meat and fish dishes.
